Dark Materials: The Secrets of Political Fiction

Clinton Fernandes and Nicholas Jose talk about writing political fiction—its possibilities, challenges and pleasures, as well as its relevance in Australian today.

Clinton Fernandes’s most recent book is Subimperial Power: Australia in the International Arena (2022).He has published widely on Timor-Leste and knows a lot about secrets and lies. Novelist Nicholas Jose’s most recent book is The Idealist,  which concerns Australian behaviour towards East Timor and draws on Fernandes’s work. Shortlisted for this year’s Age Book of the Year in Fiction, The Idealist is described as a ‘stunning’ political thriller.

Clinton Fernandes

Professor Clinton Fernandes is in the Future Operations Research Group at the University of New South Wales. His work analyses the operational environment that near-future military forces will encounter. He has published on the relationship between science, diplomacy and international law, intelligence operations in foreign policy, the implications of new technology, and Australia's external relations more generally. His latest book is Sub-Imperial Power: Australia in the International Arena
 

Nicholas Jose

Nicholas Jose is a novelist, essayist, and playwright, whose thirteen books include the novels Paper Nautilus, Avenue of Eternal Peace (shortlisted for the Miles Franklin Award), The Custodians (shortlisted for the Commonwealth Prize), Original Face and, most recently The Idealist published in 2023 and shortlisted for the Age Book of the Year Award. He is also the author of two short story collections, a volume of essays, Chinese Whispers, and the memoir Black Sheep.

He has also served as Chair of Creative Writing at Adelaide University, Visiting Chair of Australian Studies at Harvard University, and is a past president of International PEN Sydney. He is Adjunct Professor in the Writing and Society Research Centre, Western Sydney University and Emeritus Professor of English and Creative Writing at The University of Adelaide.

Paul Daley

Paul Daley is a multi-award winning journalist and an author of fiction and non-fiction books. He has been a finalist in major Australian literary awards including the Prime Minister’s History Prize and the NIB Award. He is a feature writer and columnist for The Guardian, where he largely writes about national identity, history and Indigenous issues. His most recent book is Jesustown: A Novel (Allen & Unwin, 2022), a critically praised novel about Australian frontier violence, anthropology and cultural theft. His next novel is due for publication in 2025.
