Join Meredith Curnow (Publisher of literary fiction and narrative non-fiction at Penguin Random House Australia), internationally esteemed literary agent Catherine Drayton and Elizabeth Weiss (Publisher and Digital Publishing Director at Allen & Unwin), as they and Festival Artistic Director Mary Cunnane discuss the state of publishing in Australia and internationally, including industry trends such as Book Tok, the challenges of AI, and the opportunities presented by new formats, including audio and e-books.

Meredith Curnow

Meredith Curnow publishes fiction and non-fiction for Penguin Random House Australia. Meredith is a proud board member of Express Media, a national organisation providing support and development opportunities for young Australian writers.   

Catherine Drayton

Catherine Drayton has worked for over two decades as a Literary Agent with InkWell Management, headquartered in New York. She represents adult and children’s fiction as well as memoirs, psychology, science and nature writing. Her bestselling and award-winning clients include Markus ZusakBeth HoffmanJohn FlanaganBecca FitzpatrickGavriel Savit, Krystal Sutherland, Holly Wainwright, Cath Crowley, Belinda Alexandra and Karen Foxlee. She particularly loves working with debut authors and is looking for writing that is memorable and enduring.

Catherine has a BA/LLB from the University of Sydney and a Masters of Law from the University of NSW, and has practiced law in Sydney. 

When she isn’t reading, she can be found swimming, surfing, hiking and cooking for family and friends.

Elizabeth Weiss

Elizabeth Weiss is Publisher and Digital Publishing Director at Allen & Unwin in Sydney. She started in book publishing with a community group in the late 1980s and cut her teeth in desktop publishing with a dot matrix printer at Horan Wall & Walker. She publishes trade non-fiction in Australian history, biography and memoir, First Nations issues, current affairs, and health. Elizabeth also manages the e-book program and digital publishing at Allen & Unwin. She currently serves on the APA’s Sustainability Working Group and has been involved in industry issues for many years.

Mary is a former publisher and literary agent -- now a freelance editor and publishing consultant -- with extensive experience in the industry in both the United States and Australia.
