Marc Fennell hosts an Evening of Words and Music at the Berry School of Arts, with a bar run by SocialLife. Live performances by Kane Calcite, Nicole Smede & Kay Proudlove.  The evening promises to be great fun.

Kane Calcite

Kane Calcite is a singer, songwriter from the NSW South Coast, Australia.

With his smooth earthy sounds fused seamlessly with captivating acoustic melodies, Kane’s music embodies the emotive world of storytelling and the authentic essence of Indie-Folk.

Drawing inspiration from his innate love of nature and the power of human connection, Kane crafts melodies that invite music fans on a journey of self-discovery and a glimpse into his world and the depth of his musical expression. With his moving performances he breathes life into tales of love that carry the weight of his own life experiences, vulnerability and sincerity. 

His wholesome authenticity has solidified his reputation on the Australian music scene which has seen him share the stage with the likes of Matt Corby, The Cat Empire, The Dreggs, Steph Strings, Thirsty Merc, Salt Tree, Pacific Avenue, The Terrys and is set to play alongside celebrated blues musician Ash Grunwald. 

Marc Fennell

Marc Fennell is a Walkley Award-winning journalist and documentary maker. A five-time medallist at the New York Festivals TV and Radio Awards, Marc has been nominated twice for Europe’s prestigious Rose d’Or Awards for Excellence in Television. He is a recipient of America’s coveted James Beard Foundation Award, an Asian Creative Academy National Award, and Webby Award Honors. The Times (UK) has called Marc the “cheerful Aussie version of Louis Theroux”.   

Marc is the creator of the popular, award-winning television series and podcast Stuff the British Stole for ABC Australia and CBC Canada. He is also the quizmaster of SBS TV’s Mastermind and has fronted groundbreaking docs like the Logie & AACTA-nominated School That Tried to End Racism (ABC 2021), The Kingdom (SBS 2023), The Mission (SBS 2023), Rose d’Or-shortlisted art-heist docu-series Framed (SBS 2021), as well as the hit Audible Original Podcasts It Burns (2019), Nut Jobs (2020), and House of Skulls (2023).

Kay Proudlove

Kay Proudlove is a Wollongong raised musician, writer and creative. Having worked in the music industry for over fifteen fifteen years as a recording and performing artist, Kay has just completed a national tour of her first one-woman theatrical show Dear Diary, a journey of stories and songs from her early 2000’s teenage memoirs. Spanning both theatre and composition, Kay’s writing style is observational, witty, hilarious and heartbreaking.

Nicole Smede

Nicole Smede is a poet, musician, multi-disciplinary artist, and Arts educator of Warrimay/Birribay and colonial descent, living and creating on Wodi Wodi Dharawal Country. Her poetry can be found in the Australian Poetry Journal; Mascara Literary Review; Never Heard of Them (2019); Guwayu: for all times (2020); What we Carry, (2021); and 20x20x12: Sensing Place (2021). 

Nicole was the co-recipient of the 2020 Shoalhaven Arts Board Grant and the South Coast Writers Centre Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Writing Mentorship. Her work is held in national collecting institutions. Nicole has conducted workshops for The NSW Department of Education's Arts Unit, The Song Company, Bundanon Trust, Red Room Poetry, Wollongong City Council and local schools in the Shoalhaven.  

Nicole has performed and recorded classical, theatre, rock and contemporary music, in film and on the stages of Parliament House, the City Recital Hall, and the Mona Foma Festival. Her vocals are featured in a number of soundtracks, including Ivan Sen's ‘Goldstone’ and APRA award-winning film score '1919'. In 2022, Nicole was a recipient of the inaugural Space to Create residency at The Australian National University, and in 2023, an APRA AMCOS Women in Music mentee, and a participant in The Ngarra-Burria First Peoples Composer program. 

The Berry Writers Festival acknowledges the Dharawal and Dhurga language-speaking groups who are traditional owners of this area. We acknowledge their customs and culture, which have nourished, and continue to nourish, this land. And we extend our respects to Elders, past, present, and future.
